Tonight I had the privilege of watching a pre-screening of Watchmen at Rave Motion Pictures in Town Square, Las Vegas, NV (courtesy of Gofobo). One word: WOW! It’s based on the 1986/1987 DC Comics graphic novel by writer Alan Moore. It’s been years since I last perused the pages of the book, but this movie did live up to my expectations.

First, it’s an epic movie, running about 2 hours and 45 minutes. Pee before entering the theatre and again 5 minutes before it starts. Second, parents please leave your children at home. There are scenes that are extremely graphic in both sexual and violent nature. There is no shortage of flesh or assorted dangly bits, and also there are themes that kids under 13 will probably not fully comprehend. I certainly wouldn’t want to be trying to answer questions about the ultimate life joke in terms that a 7 year old would understand. If you do, go right ahead. This is why you’re the parent and I’m not!

Alas, I digress. Watchmen definitely pleased me both visually and musically. Zach Snyder, director, did an awsome job of creating those graphic novel type effects. As I tweeted upon leaving the theatre, the movie is epic, interesting visuals, dark, sexy, & action packed. A number of slow motion, pause, actual speed effects pull focus on the action — much like looking at a comic frame. These stunning effects are juxtaposed with 70′s and 80′s tunes (Leonard Cohen, Nena, Tears for Fears, Jimi Hendrix, Philip Glass, etc.) that provide a very interesting explanation to the action. As with 300, the scenes are extremely dark, and color is used to accentuate the setting instead of overtake them. As for the computer graphics, they were interesting and at times seemed to overtake the meaning of the scene. This is particularly true for the Laurie and Dr. Manhattan on Mars scene. The fight scenes were well choreographed, quick cutting and hard hitting. And of course there’s the obligitory love triangle (complete with a fairly graphic sex scene and a few frontal shots of CG Dr. Manhattan dangly man bits). There’s not much left for the imagination.

Acting was good as well. [SPOILER ALERT] One of the final scenes where Dan/Night Owl (Patrick Wilson) drivels as Dr. Manhattan obliterates Rorschach seemed overly sappy and contrived. [END SPOILER] Yes, some things became trite, but the characters were well-formed and consistent with the books. Overall, it’s a good movie and definitly one of the best in the graphic novel turned movie genre.

While I think Barack being elected is a great thing for the U.S.A., I wonder about the pressure that he now holds on his shoulders. It’s not going to be an easy ride, that’s for sure. But with so much hope for change, can one person uphold this ideal? I look around at the ballot measures and realize that we — as a society — still run scared of differences. Proposition 8 in California looks like it didn’t pass. A few states had items banning same-sex couples from adopting on their ballots, while others voted to ban abortion. In many ways, this is completely opposite from what the country voted into the highest office in the U.S.A. If we want change that badly, first it needs to start with tolerance and acceptance that everyone is not the same. Not in looks, in skin color, in sexual preferences, in life choices. We do not live in a one-size-fits-all world. This nation was founded on the escape from religious and societal persecution. Now we persecute women on their decision to keep or abort babies, deny GLBT couples the right to happiness (many of which have more loving relationships than their hetero counterparts), and deny the right to a family. Where have we gone wrong? And who is going to carry the hope once the incoming president can no longer carry it by himself? We are a nation of great individuals. I sincerely hope that we overcome our differences to carry the flame of hope beyond Obama’s term in office. Atlas shouldn’t have to carry the heavens alone.

In my search and quest to finish my voter registration in Nevada I decided to double check that the Green Party (go ahead, bring on the hippy taunts…) is recognized in this state. It is, and there’s even a state chapter based out of Reno. Well, through this search I also saw that Nevada recognizes the SuperHappy Party. I cannot make this up. Curiosity may kill me one of these days, but I decided to look at their by-laws, and then followed to their home page. They appear to have undergone a metamorphosis of types… the page displayed is for the Robot Party. Apparently they now stand for heterosexual women (We will condition all heterosexual males to like women better…) having wealth and education. In fact, everyone will be wealthy and robots do all the work. And the connection to the nameSuperHappy Party is finally found in item five in their constitution. The best part, however, comes on their SuperHappyStrategies page:

The Robot Party encourages all candidates to dress in Superhappy Costumes while running in elections and after winning elections, they encourage the candidates to always dress in superhappy costumes while in their public office positions.

Uh, yeah. The site makes me smile, but every day as Halloween? I think my sweet tooth would give up after a week. I wish I were making this up… no really… go read it for yourself!

I don’t know how many people follow copyright law, but the idiots on capitol hill are trying to do it again. They want to place insane royalty fees on internet radio stations. The most interesting quote I read so far about this is:

FM stations – including those owned by media conglomerates like Clear Channel – pay nothing at all!

I know that these type of radio stations opened my eyes to new artists and forms of music, and provide a springboard on which these upcoming bands launch themselves towards major labels. Which, in turn, feed FM stations. I think that this U.S. Copyright board will destroy the changes the pop music industry underwent in the last ten years. Because of internet radio, I purchased albums and tracks from artist I never hear on top 40 stations. I help to create the long tail of music and contribute to the band’s royalties. Kill internet radio, you hurt the artist. And isn’t that what copyright and royalties protect?

If you want to help, go to SaveTheStreams.org and sign the petition at the very least.

Another petition started via RadioParadise.com is also available for signatures. There’s also some great information posted about this subject for further reading.

Aargh! I’m very scared for the state of Florida over the next 4 years. As of the current time, it appears as if the people Crist over Davis. In my opinion, Crist is much more right wing than any of the Bush counterparts. There’s something about him that just doesn’t sit well with me. It also appears as if Florida is still a GOP state, which is very interesting considering the attitudes of the public down here. On the other hand, Harris was NOT elected to the senate. Thank goodness! Maybe it takes a scandal for everyone to see the personality type of the office-holder. Bill Nelson, please don’t let us down…..
