I carry bad news for the religious right….
Many of the current traditions started long before Jesus Christ was a thought in our feeble minds. Evergreens were used to ward off evil winter spirits and also as a reminder of the spring and summer growing seasons. The holiday lights that everyone places on their German-Christian trees and on their blessed homes are a traditional pagan tradition. Early mankind worshipped and feared the winter solstice because they were afraid the sun was sick and might disappear forever. To combat this feeling, they built stone structures to measure daylight and sun position, building a bonfire on the longest night of the year to celebrate the sun’s return. The Yule log is a Norse tradition that also celebrates the return of the sun.
The reason this interests me so much is that in Florida, one county banned Christmas trees because they were a religious symbol. In that case, ban the lights, any wreath, apples, all the feasts and gift giving because they’re all some form of religious or pagan symbol. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander, and — POOF! — there goes any holiday celebration out the door.
The society of the U.S.A. is swinging too far in the way of political correctness. Everyone is afraid of offending everyone, not taking into account that we are all still human and possess the same basic needs. I don’t think I’m too far off base when I say every person wants to be treated with respect, feel safe and loved, and seeks ways to be happy, purposeful, and fulfilled. As you go about your lives this holiday season, keep that in the back of your mind. It’ll make the season much merrier!
